Is Argan Oil a hype?

Roots twenty years in the ground somewhere in the Sous valley, years spent between the humid breeze of the Atlantic and the scorching gusts of the Sahara, the mighty Argan tree is finally ready to give back. The beautiful Argan kernels are fresh out of the fruit and are ready to be pressed and enjoyed all over the world. But is the golden oil worth the hype? An answer to this question must be grounded in science and this is the simple breakdown:

1. Argan Oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids:  Argan Oil is composed of 99-percent acylglycerides (primarily triglycerides). Of these, oleic and linoleic acids represent the majority (up to 49% oleic and up to 36% linoleic).

Argan oil is therefore a high-end moisturizer for your skin and a great replacement for the necessary hair oils we continuously lose with excessive dying, washing, drying, and styling. The best part is that it is readily absorbed with no greasy look or feel, making it a perfect companion to makeup or sunscreen. When applied regularly, Argan helps slow the impacts of aging. The better your moisturizer is, the less pronounced those stubborn wrinkles are. Argan is such a good moisturizer it helps ward off nasty dry skin conditions such as Dermatitis or Eczema.

2. Argan Oil is rich in vitamin E, or tocopherol, a fat-soluble vitamin and a potent antioxidant that reduces the damaging effects of free radicals. Compare the tocopherol content in Argan oil (620 mg per kilogram) to that found in the wondrous olive oil (320 mg per kilogram) and be amazed! Argan also includes carotenes, tocopherols, triterpene alcohols, sterols, and xanthophylls.

Argan Oil has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These, coupled with Argan’s non-greasy moisturizing effects, balance acne-prone skin and help combat acne and similar skin conditions.

In a nutshell, Argan moisturizes, protects from sun damage, prevents and treats a number of skin conditions, heals skin infections, and boasts anti-aging effects.

Do not be fooled by a component-driven assessment of the oil, however. Argan’s components can be found in nature and in other oils. However, it is the naturally occurring balance of the components that is driving scientific research and curiosity about this oil.
